Before step one: You are using a Web browser, such as Internet Explorer, to view Help. For all procedures, switch back to Internet Mail and News by clicking one of its windows or choosing it on the Finder menu before you do step one. |
- If the Newsgroup window is not open, choose Newsgroups from the Windows menu.
- In the Newsgroup window, select the newsgroup that you want to read.
- On the News menu, choose Go To Newsgroup. A status window appears, showing the number of articles that are downloading. You can continue to perform other tasks while the news messages are downloaded to your machine.
- To view the message in the preview pane, click the message in the
message list. The text of the message appears in the preview pane below
the message list.
- To view the message in a separate window, double-click the message.
Note
- Messages that are a part of a series of responses to an original message are gathered together and stored with the original message. To see the replies to a message, click the triangle to the left of the original message.

Sorting the news message list
- In the Newsgroup window, find a newsgroup you want to read, and double-click it to see the articles.
- Click the Display Subjects Containing box above the message list, and choose which column you want to search on.
- In the text box to the right of the menu, type the word(s) contained in the message you are looking for. As you type, only the messages that match what you type will be visible.
- To show the entire list of messages again, delete the text you typed.

- In the Newsgroup window, find a newsgroup you want to read, and double-click it to see the articles.
- Click the column heading you want to sort by.
- To switch between ascending and descending sort order, click the triangle that appears in the column heading.

- On the Edit menu, choose Filters.
- Click News, located in the upper-left of the dialog box.
- Click New, located in the lower-left of the dialog box.
- In the News Filter Name box, type a new name for the filter.
- Make sure that the Enabled check box is selected so that the filter will work for incoming messages once you have finished creating it. You can also apply the filter to existing messages by selecting the message(s) and choosing Filter Message With from the Message menu. You can turn the filter off later by clearing the Enabled check box.
- Filters work in the order that they appear in the filter list. To change where your new filter appears in the list, select it, and click the up and down arrows below the filter list.
- If you want to filter on a newsgroup, choose a rule from the Contains menu to the right of Newsgroup, and then type the text that applies to the rule.
- On the Field menu, choose the field you want to filter on.
- On the Contains menu, choose the rule you want the filter to follow.
- In the text box, type the text that applies to the rule.
- If you want to create a second rule, choose And or Or from the Ignore menu, and then follow steps 7 to 9.
- In the Actions area, select what action you would like to happen when a mail message matches the criteria you set.

Set Color |
Changes the color of the news messages that fit the criteria you set. To choose a color, click the color box. |

Example
- If you wanted to mark all messages that contain the word "mac" in any newsgroup that contains the word "mac" with the color purple, you would first need to create a news filter by clicking New and giving it a name. Then, in the Criteria area, you would choose Contains on the Newsgroup Contains menu, and then type the word "mac" in the text box. Next, you would choose Subject on the Field menu, contains on the Contain menu, and then type the word "mac" in the text box. Then, in the Actions area, you would select the Set Color check box, and click the color box to change the color to purple.

delete.
- To change the filter information, make changes as needed, and then click OK.
- To disable the filter so that it will not work, clear the Enabled check box.
- To delete the filter, click Delete.
